SafeTube4Kids Privacy Policy
1. What the app is
SafeTube4Kids is a parental-control video launcher. A parent chooses which YouTube channels a child may watch and sets daily time limits. Parent settings are protected by a PIN. The app is intended to be set up by a parent or guardian and then used by a child under the parent's control.
2. Information we collect
We (the developer) collect no information. The app has no sign-in, does not ask for your name, email, location, contacts, photos, microphone or camera, and does not contain advertising or analytics software. Nothing is sent to the developer.
3. Information stored on your device
To work, the app keeps the following in its private storage on your device only:
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| The parent PIN, stored only as a salted one-way hash (PBKDF2-SHA256), and the number of wrong tries | To protect parent settings |
| Approved channels (name, channel ID, picture address) | To show only the channels a parent approved |
| Age-group choice, shared daily time limit, custom time per channel | To apply the limits you chose |
| Watch time used per channel and per day | To enforce the time limits |
| Optional: your own YouTube Data API key, if you type one in | To use your own YouTube allowance instead of the app's built-in key (you can leave it empty) |
| A cache of recent video titles, durations and thumbnail addresses | To show channels quickly |
This information is not sent to us. You can erase it at any time by clearing the app's storage in Android Settings (Apps > SafeTube4Kids > Storage > Clear data) or by uninstalling the app. If Android's backup feature is turned on for your device, Android may back up the app's data to your own Google account as it does for most apps; that is controlled by your device and Google account settings, not by us.
4. Connections to YouTube and Google
The app needs the internet. It makes requests directly from your device to Google services:
- The YouTube Data API (googleapis.com): to find a channel you add or search for, and to list its videos. The app has its own API key built in for this (it identifies the app, not you); if you typed in your own key, yours is used instead. The @handle, link, channel ID or name you search for is sent in these requests. If the YouTube Data API can't answer (for example the app's daily allowance is used up), the app uses youtube.com instead: each approved channel's public video feed and, when you add a channel by @handle or link, that channel's page; names are then only matched against the app's built-in list of recommended channels.
- youtube.com (the current date and time): the app reads the date from the answers YouTube's servers send, so that daily time limits follow the real date even if the device's clock is changed. Nothing about you is sent for this beyond the request itself.
- youtube.com/iframe_api and youtube-nocookie.com (the YouTube embedded player): to play the videos. The player is YouTube's own and is Google's service.
- i.ytimg.com and other Google image servers: to show video thumbnails and channel pictures.
When the app contacts these services, Google receives the technical information any internet request carries, such as your IP address, device and browser type, and the request itself (for example which video is played). Google handles that information under its own policies: Google Privacy Policy and the YouTube Terms of Service. By using the app's YouTube features you are also agreeing to be bound by the Google Privacy Policy. The app does not sign you in to YouTube or Google, so videos play without any account and without your watch history.
Videos are played with YouTube's normal player, so YouTube may show its own advertisements before or during some videos. SafeTube4Kids does not choose, display or receive money from these ads. The app does not use the Android advertising ID.
5. Children
SafeTube4Kids is designed for families. Children use the app under a parent's control, but the app does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children, because it collects no personal information at all. Children cannot open settings without the parent PIN, cannot search for or add channels, and can only watch channels the parent approved. Videos still come from YouTube channels, and the app cannot vouch for what an approved channel publishes. Parents should choose channels carefully.
6. Sharing, selling and security
We do not sell, rent, share or disclose personal information because we do not have any. All connections to YouTube and Google use HTTPS. The PIN is never stored in readable form.
7. Your choices
- Use the app without entering an API key. It has its own built-in key.
- Remove channels in Parent settings at any time.
- Clear the app's data or uninstall the app to erase everything stored by the app on the device.
8. Changes to this policy
If the app changes in a way that affects privacy, we will update this page and its effective date before the new version is released.
